Pass the bread...

Basket of Bread by Salvatore Dali
see larger original, and other Dali paintings, here.

Bill Moyers has given the commencement address of the year:

Frankly, I'm not sure anyone from my generation should be saying anything to your generation except, "We're sorry. We're really sorry for the mess you're inheriting. We are sorry for the war in Iraq. For the huge debts you will have to pay for without getting a new social infrastructure in return. We're sorry for the polarized country. The corporate scandals. The corrupt politics. Our imperiled democracy. We're sorry for the sprawl and our addiction to oil and for all those toxins in the environment. Sorry about all this, class of 2006. Good luck cleaning it up.

h/t to Braveneworld.

  1. Well fucking said Bill!

At my college graduation, we had Mr. Rogers speak. He literally came out with a keyboard and played "won't you be my neighbor" to the class of 1999. Girls swooned as if they were at a Beatles show in 1964.

  2. "The Sorriest Generation"

  3. beautifully done!

i look at my 2 year old granddaughter and wonder about the future even more than when my daughter was born.

she was born in 73, the war was ending, nixon was leaving and all seemed well on the way to a better time. sad, it wasn't so!

  4. What do the Bush defenders tell their children about the mess they'll inherit?

  5. they tell them that it's the dems fault. never can start too early with the indocrination. either that or they simply deny that all is not right with the world. they do live in a fantasty bubble.

  6. Amen to That!

Sheesh...I love my daughters and have such a sinking sense of HOW it will be when they get to *inherit* their share of this mess. *sigh*

Time to recapture our world and Fix IT.

  7. some top shelf posting of late, good writing, good links, and the excerpts -some good stuff I had missed. glad I stopped by.

  8. Moyers...speaking truth to power. Let's hope the grads picked up on your message and will carry it out...

  9. What do the Bush defenders tell their children about the mess they'll inherit?

It depends on which of the three main groups they belong to:

For the super-rich: Don't worry about it. You'll be fine.

For the ones who fell for the idea that they should support the rich because they'll be rich themselves some day: Don't worry about it. Work hard and you'll be fine.

For the religious fanatics: Don't worry about it. You'll be taken up.

  10. Wow! Blu Gal you'd think by now they'd realise the bread is for sharing. There's enough for ALL, just not enough for the 'greedy'. Like Marie Antoinette I guess some still think "let them eat cake" I'm alright Louis, or is it Jack?

Love the bread basket, love the link, love BG. Laters ... Q

  11. Great comments, folks. As usual Sandy you take my breath away, but it's a good thing...

Sherry there is no f-ing way you are old enough to be a grandmother.

qwerty you are closer to the truth than you realize. too many "in case of rapture this car will be unmanned" bumper stickers in Alabama.

  12. Thanks for sharing this Fran. I found this too and have started to share. This message is the side of our "Judeo-Christian" culture that the Christian Right forgets about.

    Pass the bread.

I really look forward to hearing what you have to say. I do moderate comments, but non-spam comments will take less than 24 hours to appear... Thanks!
