ReplyDeleteAs colonies, Georgia and South Carolina were the first places in the Western world to offer religious freedom. That is why Charleston and Savannah have very old (by American standards) French Hugenot and Jewish congregations. Those cities were also havens for Catholics, Quakers, and Protestant dissenters.
