New Year's Eve Open Thread: What will make BG better?

one of my favorite Post Secrets

So I'm working on how I can take Blue Gal, the blog, to the "next level," without a preconceived notion of what that means.

I don't want to become one of the big blogs. I noticed one comment thread had over thirty posts yesterday. On this blog, that is a sign that something is wrong. I'm not interested in hosting a chat room, even though I participate occasionally in Shakespeare's Sister's virtual bar and really enjoy it.

One thing I have resolved for next year is to read more, and the way to accomplish that (since the blog runs my life these days) is to do a monthly book review. "Art and Chaos Day", where I invite readers to join me at an online art museum, will become a bi-weekly feature. There's too much good art on the web to miss.

I'd love any other ideas you might have. Thanks.

While I am loath to quote Billy Joel, under any and almost all circumstances, I love you just the way you are.

Like OG says, you're all over the place. Which is why I visit here first every day. I like being surprised. I like clicking here and laughing out loud at your latest bit of panty-related humor. I like your righteous indignation. I like your expressions of faith, and I love the way you look when you're angry. I like your links to great writing that I don't have time to seek out on my own.

And I like that you put up with ME. I promise not to be so chatty, esp. when I should know better.

    Please don't change.

If you want to take the blog "To the next level", you better define what you mean first.

Do you have traffic goals? Awards you'd like to earn? Money? Peer recognition?

    A cheeseburger?

The first step to getting what you want is honestly admitting what it is.

  7. My philosophy is that better blogging comes from a few major fundamentals that can always improve no matter how good anyone is, and BG, you are one of the very best.

    1) Clarity. The writer's lifelong pursuit to evoke laser clear images in the minds of the readers.

    2) Passion. If you feel it, do not conceal it. Again, you would be the example I would recommend to others on this.

    3) Personality. Also known as persona and character. People are attracted to people, so make sure you keep being a person.

    Commander obvious, signing off.

Have a great New Year BG and family!

I'm with Quaker Dave, equally loath to quote Billy Joel, but I have to agree.

I like the community aspect of your blog. Unlike some of the bigger blogs, I'm never hesitant to comment here. Sometimes the comments threads at those other sites take on the air of a private clubhouse.

Your blog has humor, insight, intelligence, and substance. Which is why it's so damn good.

  9. Darlin' - don't go changing, trying to please me... (why did someone have to mention Billy Joel, the iceberg lettuce of rock?)...

I think you already have your secret to success: just keep being you. This is always a thoughtful, funny, and probing read. And then, there are the panties.

    Best regards for 2007,

    Tengrain

You don't need to change. I started reading your blog, after a friend of mine, an accomplished knitter, told me about Blog de la Resistance (now Threading Water) because of the stimulating political content, and fine writing, and then I clicked on the link to your blog. I appreciate what you have to say, and will show restraint in not responding to what I think are troll-like comments. C'est la vie. Time to move on. Happy New Year.

  11. no panties in church is hil.ar.i.ous.

don't sweat it about the meme. we only did it cause we were tagged by a "real" life friend. after we got linked by wonkette earlier this week, i wanted to give some link love to our favorite brainy babe blogger.

  12. Unlike some people, I'm not embarrassed to quote Billy Joel lyrics.

How about a pair of pink sidewinders
And a bright orange pair of pants?
You could really be a Beau Brummel baby
If you just give it half a chance.
Don't waste your money on a new set of speakers,
You get more mileage from a cheap pair of sneakers.

    Words to live by.
