Only in Alabama, part 890,597,289,896,732

Alabama Department of Homeland Security took down a website that indicated that environmentalists, gay-rights groups, and animal-rights organizations could be possible harbors for terrorists.

Signalling the possible presence of terrorist activity included groups with "people who feel they are trying to create a better world."

Alabama DHS director "said the site had been up since spring 2004, and had gotten a relatively small number of hits until it recently became the subject of blogs..."

  1. And the Alabama nimrod says he's going to put back up, just minus the direction references to specific groups.

I guess he's just one of those self-appointed, "people who feel they are trying to create a better world."

Again, this is why I left the South. Love the land, can't live with the haters.

Which means I have a lot of respect for Mr. BG. His fight not mine.

  3. With all due respect to everyone here, I tend to doubt this is the only place where this is going on.

Maybe it's just the only example we KNOW about. After hearing about that mess with the Coast Guard last week on 60 Minutes (You know, the folks who are supposed to protect our PORTS, nothing would shock me.

    QD,

You really have to live in the south to understand the mindset. Yes there are haters in other regions of the US, but nowhere is it more institutionalized than the south.

As the article states, the Homeland Security of AL will continue to believe that peace protesters and gays rights advocates are linked to terrorism, but when the site comes back up they will not be so blatant about it.

If you challenge authority you challenge the very foundation of the government. I spent 20 years in the South; the N word is still used today in polite company when people think it's safe. The tree that they used for lynching’s, in one town, was so revered they named the town after the tree. Everyone was upset when some outside agitators killed the tree with herbicides.

Dave Chappell had a line “This racism is killing me”. I often think about the black men I grew up with and wonder if or how they have survived the South.

  6. Some ... and the operative word is "some" ... anti-abortion activists are terrorists. They have terrorized, severely injured and killed individuals providing legal medical services, seeking services, or protecting women entering health clinics.

I'm with QuakerDave on this. If it were only the South we had to worry about, I'd feel a lot better about the health of this nation. As it stands, I find myself more and more distressed by what was once just a paranoid fancy -- that GWB won't step down in Jan, '09. That '06 was our last free election.

I'm afraid that Quaker Dave is right. I'm from the South and I thought once I left there, I would escape this kind of thing. Sadly, I see traces of it even here in NY State.

And yet another reason to celebrate blogs, if they called attention to this sort of thing.

Well, being from the South, I have no other context. And I can tell you that just yesterday I had someone tell me that they could be friendly with Blacks, but did not want to live near them for fear that their daughters might decide to marry one... I threw up shortly thereafter!

incidents like this illustrate that it's not just national security The Man is after, but conformity... these groups shake the status quo and are therefore seen as a danger to our way of life... so they are lumped in with people like Osama bin Laden, who genuinely are a threat to us... pathetic, and very narrow-minded...

Another news line that reads like satire. Unbelievable. How dare these people try to improve the world. Oh, the temerity!

  13. While I'm concerned about this, I'm more concerned about the many national databases. The Pentagon will get busted for spying on vegetarians and lesbians and keeping the files, but they just keep doing it anyway.
